The state of Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh will observe a public holiday on Friday, May 30, in commemoration of the martyrdom of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru. All government offices, schools, colleges, and educational institutions will remain closed on this day.
Although the date was already included in Punjab’s official list of gazetted holidays for 2025, the Chandigarh Administration has now issued a formal notification confirming the holiday within the Union Territory as well.
The observance marks the supreme sacrifice of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, who is remembered for his spiritual leadership and martyrdom in the face of religious persecution.
Extended Weekend for Residents
With May 30 falling on a Friday, and most institutions remaining closed on Saturday, May 31, followed by Sunday, June 1, residents in Punjab and Chandigarh are set to enjoy a three-day weekend. The timing is particularly convenient for families planning short trips or wishing to partake in religious observances.
The long weekend also precedes the beginning of summer vacations in schools. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains recently announced that summer holidays for all schools in the state will run from June 2 to June 30.
The convergence of the public holiday, regular weekend closures, and the onset of summer vacation presents an opportunity for families to spend extended time together, either in leisure or in spiritual reflection.
