Rainfall Alert for Dragon Boat Festival Travelers

by Bella

Travelers in central and eastern China are advised to prepare for a large-scale rainfall event during the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival holiday, which spans from Saturday to Monday, according to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA).

The CMA has issued warnings for significant rainfall across several regions, including parts of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Tibet Autonomous Region, and the provinces of Hubei, Henan, Anhui, Guizhou, and Yunnan.

Zhang Hengde, deputy director of the National Meteorological Center, emphasized that the meteorological risk for travel in these areas is rated as high. He urged the public to closely follow weather updates and take necessary precautions. Special attention is advised for mountainous areas, where heavy rain could trigger geological hazards such as landslides.

Meanwhile, the main wheat-producing regions in northern China are approaching their peak mechanized wheat harvesting period, scheduled for early to mid-June. The CMA forecasts light to moderate rain between Saturday and Monday in drought-affected areas including southeastern Gansu, southern Shaanxi, and southwestern Henan.

Zhang noted that while the rainfall will help alleviate drought conditions, it may temporarily disrupt wheat harvesting activities in some locations. However, he added that central and northern Shaanxi, northwestern Henan, southern Shandong, and northern Anhui are expected to experience dry conditions over the next ten days, which should facilitate accelerated harvesting efforts.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, nearly 20 percent of the summer wheat crop—covering approximately 4.67 million hectares—had been harvested as of Monday.
