Burnham-On-Sea traders reported a successful Bank Holiday weekend, with strong foot traffic and boosted sales, marking a promising start to the summer tourist season. The town’s businesses benefitted from dry weather, which encouraged both shoppers and beachgoers to venture out.
On Monday, May 5th, Burnham’s seafront car parks were filled as visitors flocked to the beaches in Burnham and Brean, despite cool winds. The dry conditions played a key role in drawing crowds, making it one of the busiest days of the long weekend.
Lee Bond, proprietor of The Esplanade Fish Bar, described the Bank Holiday weekend as “busy,” noting that trade this year had been better than the previous year. Similarly, Karl Rawlins, owner of the Little Italy On Sea ice cream shop along the seafront, reported strong ice cream sales, calling the start of the season “positive” due to favorable weather.
Retailers in the town centre also saw increased activity. Satnam Singh, manager of Burnham Shopping Centre, observed that the dry weather brought more shoppers out, leading to a busy Bank Holiday weekend. Colin Morris of GW Hurley described trade as “okay overall,” while Carrie-Anne Davies of Carrie-Anne’s gift shop mentioned that the last few weeks had been generally positive.
Gavin Holman, owner of Brit Chips, said the weekend had been a “good start to the season,” with a mixed Friday and Saturday but a notably busy Sunday.
However, not all businesses experienced consistent traffic. Harry and Shirley Bird, owners of Hazza Vapes and Shirley’s Sparkles, noted that while Saturday and Sunday were excellent, Bank Holiday Monday was quieter for them.
Overall, the weekend’s success highlights a positive trend for Burnham-On-Sea’s local economy as it enters the height of its tourist season.
