Carolina Beach Welcomes Holiday Crowds for Centennial Summer

Carolina Beach experienced a surge of visitors over the Memorial Day weekend, marking the official start of its summer tourist season and the kickoff to the town’s centennial year celebration.

Town Council Member Jay Healy noted the annual influx of tourists significantly increases the local population during the summer months. “We go from 6,900 residents to 25 to 30 thousand overnight, so it’s a positive boost for the community,” Healy said.

At Carolina Beach Lake Park, the number of vendors nearly doubled this holiday weekend, rising from the typical 90 to 150. “Businesses are extremely pleased,” Healy added, highlighting the town’s economic growth. “We opened thirty new businesses last year, which is remarkable for our area.”

The bustling boardwalk also reflected the busy start to the season. Sierra Hunt, manager of Beach Bunny Ice Cream, shared that the recent carnival opening on Thursday attracted large crowds. “The carnival brings a lot of people down here, and it’s been a lot busier. Everyone’s excited for summer and happy to be at the beach. We’re in a prime spot across from Britt’s, so customers are enjoying donuts and ice cream while soaking up the atmosphere,” Hunt said.

Staff at King’s Beachwear reported a strong turnout, particularly during Thursday night’s fireworks display. “Last night was a great start, but I know the crowds will only grow busier,” said employee Katlyn Elliott. Addi Fitzpatrick, another team member, explained, “During summer, we often close around 11 or midnight. After the fireworks, customers keep coming in late, so we stay busy cleaning up afterward.” Elliott added, “With Britt’s open, more tourists are visiting and purchasing Carolina Beach-themed merchandise, especially during sales.”

Councilman Healy anticipates continued growth in traffic and visitor numbers throughout the summer months. He quoted Mayor Lynn Barbee, saying, “A great place to live is a great place to visit.” Healy emphasized, “Anyone who has lived here, whether for a few years or a lifetime, knows Carolina Beach is a special place.”

To mark its 100th anniversary, Carolina Beach plans to host a series of events throughout the year celebrating the town’s rich history and vibrant community.
