In response to a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dharwad Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu has declared a one-day holiday for all educational institutions in the district, including anganwadis, primary and high schools, pre-university (PU) and degree colleges.
The decision was taken following heavy overnight rainfall that led to severe waterlogging across Hubballi and parts of Dharwad, with Hanashi village among the worst affected.
The IMD has issued a seven-day weather warning for Karnataka, forecasting “widespread” rainfall across nearly all districts through June 17. The agency reported that coastal and north interior Karnataka will continue to see heavy rain during this period, while rainfall in south interior districts is expected to increase in intensity beginning June 14.
In coastal Karnataka—including Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi—extremely heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations, accompanied by sustained winds of 30 to 40 km/h.
North interior Karnataka is likely to experience heavier conditions, with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 km/h. Extremely heavy rainfall is forecast in districts such as Belagavi, Dharwad, and Gadag. Similar conditions, albeit slightly less intense, are anticipated in Koppal, Haveri, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, and Raichur, with moderate rain expected in Bidar and Yadgir.
In the south interior region, including Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu, the IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by winds of 50 to 60 km/h. Other districts such as Ballari, Bengaluru (Urban and Rural), Chikkaballapur, Mandya, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Mysuru, Davangere, Hassan, and Vijayanagar are expected to receive heavy rain, while moderate rainfall is likely across Chamarajanagar, Chitradurga, and Kolar.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and stay updated on weather advisories as the region prepares for continued inclement weather.
