As summer begins, the Rockaway community welcomes the return of seasonal residents and visitors. Longtime locals and new arrivals alike are settling into the warmer months, with many “snowbirds” returning after wintering in warmer climates, and vacationing families arriving to enjoy rental homes along the coast.
For many, summer is a time to reconnect with neighbors and community. “I’m fortunate to have neighbors who live by the Golden Rule,” said one local resident. “We help each other out with parking and keep an eye on each other’s homes while someone is away.”
However, not all blocks experience the same sense of harmony. Some residents have reported disturbances from ongoing construction and vehicular noise. As a reminder, the New York City Department of Buildings permits construction only between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekends. Exceptions may apply if a special permit has been granted for extended hours.
Residents have also expressed concerns about safety and noise from construction debris and vehicles. In particular, nails left behind at job sites have led to tire damage. Additionally, the use of horns and loud electric vehicles continues to be a point of contention for some community members.
Looking ahead, Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 15. Real estate activity typically sees a slowdown during that weekend, as families prioritize celebration and leisure.
Shortly after, Juneteenth—a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States—will be observed on Thursday, June 19. Most non-essential federal government offices, including the U.S. Postal Service, will be closed. Financial institutions such as banks and the stock and bond markets will also observe the holiday.
