President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared June 24, 2025, a special non-working holiday in the City of Manila to commemorate its 454th founding anniversary.
The declaration was formalized through Proclamation No. 925, signed on Wednesday by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on behalf of the President.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Manila be given full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration,” the proclamation stated.
The annual holiday marks the founding of Manila, the country’s capital, which spans 42.88 square kilometers and is located along the western coast of Luzon, bordered by Manila Bay. It is one of 17 local government units comprising the National Capital Region (NCR), also known as Metro Manila.
Manila is subdivided into 897 barangays, which are further organized into 100 zones and grouped into 16 administrative districts for efficient governance. Each barangay is led by a chairman and a council of seven members.
Historically, the name “Manila” is derived from the nilad, a flowering plant that once thrived along the banks of the Pasig River. The area was originally known as Maynilad, which later evolved into Maynila and eventually to its present form.
The June 24 holiday allows residents to take part in commemorative activities celebrating the city’s rich cultural heritage and historical significance.
