Train operator Northern is encouraging passengers to plan ahead and check schedules before travelling this bank holiday weekend, with services expected to be especially busy due to a series of major events across the North of England.
Most of Northern’s services will be operating as usual over the late May bank holiday. However, with large crowds anticipated at several high-profile events, the operator is advising customers to confirm journey details in advance and allow extra time for travel.
Major Events Expected to Increase Passenger Numbers
In Liverpool, Sefton Park will host Radio 1’s Big Weekend, drawing thousands of music fans. Nearby, the Neighbourhood Weekender festival will take place in Warrington. Additionally, Liverpool FC is set to hold a Premier League victory parade on Monday, 26 May, further increasing demand on local transport services.
Elsewhere, the Northumberland County Show will take place on Saturday, 24 May, with easy rail access via Stocksfield Station on the Tyne Valley Line.
Engineering Works to Affect Some Routes
While the majority of services will remain unaffected, engineering improvement works are scheduled on a few key routes:
Leeds – Manchester Victoria – Chester (24–26 May): Trains will terminate at Manchester Victoria. Replacement bus services will operate between Chester and Newton-le-Willows for connections to Manchester.
Leeds – Manchester Victoria – Wigan via Dewsbury (26–30 May): Trains will be diverted to run via Bradford Interchange and Halifax.
Northern also noted that some services may start later or finish earlier than usual during the holiday period.
“We want customers to enjoy everything the bank holiday weekend has to offer,” a Northern spokesperson said. “But we strongly encourage everyone to check their travel plans in advance to avoid disruption.”
Passengers are advised to consult the latest timetables and service updates via the Northern website or app before setting off.
