Kuwait Declares Five-Day Eid Al Adha Holiday Starting June 5

Kuwait will observe a five-day public holiday in celebration of Eid Al Adha, with festivities commencing on Thursday, June 5, according to official astronomical calculations by the Al Ojairi Scientific Center.

The center announced that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhu Al Hijjah, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, will be born at dawn on May 27, corresponding to the 29th day of Dhu Al Qi’dah. The crescent is expected to be visible over Kuwait’s horizon for 43 minutes after sunset on May 28, signaling the start of the new month.

Based on these observations, the Day of Arafah—the pivotal day of pilgrimage in Mecca—will fall on Thursday, June 5, followed by Eid Al Adha on Friday, June 6. The crescent moon will also be visible in Arab and Islamic capitals for between 40 and 58 minutes, confirming the alignment of the lunar calendar across the region.

In response to the upcoming holiday, Kuwait’s Cabinet has declared a suspension of work for all government agencies and public institutions from June 5 through June 9. Normal operations are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, June 10. Entities with nonstandard working hours will set their own holiday schedules accordingly.

Eid Al Adha, known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. The occasion is marked by millions of Muslims worldwide through prayer, charitable acts, and the ritual sacrifice of livestock.
