by Bella

The Punjab government has announced a public holiday on Friday, 30 May 2025, in observance of the Martyrdom Day of Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru. On this day, schools, banks, government offices, and other public institutions across the state will remain closed.

This declaration adds to the list of annual holidays recognized by the state, with two government holidays falling in May — International Workers’ Day on 1 May and the Martyrdom Day on 30 May.

Background on Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji

Guru Arjun Dev Ji was born on 15 April 1563 in Goindwal Sahib. He was the son of the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das Ji, and Bibi Bhani Ji. As a revered spiritual leader, he played a crucial role in shaping Sikhism and compiling the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of the Sikhs.

Guru Arjun Dev Ji was martyred on 30 May 1606 in Lahore (now in Pakistan) after enduring severe torture for refusing to renounce his faith and convert to Islam. His martyrdom remains a significant event commemorated annually by Sikhs worldwide.

The Punjab government’s official holiday notification urges all citizens to observe the day with respect and reflection on the sacrifices made by Guru Arjun Dev Ji.
