Severe Heatwave Keeps Multan Residents Indoors During Eid Holidays

by Bella

A severe heatwave has engulfed South Punjab during this year’s Eid celebrations, compelling residents to remain indoors as temperatures soared to between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius across the region. Public parks, recreational areas, and streets remained largely deserted despite the typically festive atmosphere associated with the holiday.

“The heat is unbearable. We don’t feel like stepping outside at all,” said Salman Amjad, a local resident. “You feel drained the moment you open the door.”

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast that the heatwave will persist until June 12, with no significant relief expected in the coming days.

Many residents who traveled back to their hometowns for Eid opted to stay inside with their families. “After eating heavy meals, especially meat, the heat becomes even more intolerable,” noted Asim, a resident of Nawabpur in Multan.

Health experts, including Dr. Waqas Arqam, have issued warnings about the dangers posed by the combination of extreme heat and rich Eid foods. “High temperatures coupled with heavy meat consumption can lead to dehydration and fatigue,” Dr. Arqam advised. “Citizens should ensure adequate water intake, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and minimize physical exertion.”

Local authorities reported a sharp decline in visitors to public spaces, with parks, playgrounds, and tourist sites remaining largely empty throughout the three-day Eid period.

The intense heat has shifted the usual lively Eid festivities to more subdued, home-centered celebrations, as residents seek refuge in the shade, rely on fans, and prioritize hydration.

Two Drown in Upper Chenab Canal Near Khambranwala

In a tragic incident near Khambranwala, Sialkot, two young men drowned while swimming in the Upper Chenab canal. Rescue 1122 officials confirmed that the victims, identified as 23-year-old Hamza from Mohallah Imam Sahib and 22-year-old Burhan from Muzaffarpur, went into deep water unexpectedly and drowned.

Rescue teams responded promptly, conducting an extensive diving operation to recover the bodies. Despite attempts to revive the victims with CPR, both succumbed to their injuries.

The bodies were handed over to the families after completion of the necessary legal formalities.

This heatwave-induced caution underscores the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions during important cultural celebrations, reminding citizens to prioritize health and safety.
