May 12 Declared Holiday for Midterm Elections

by Bella

Malacañang has officially declared May 12, 2025, a special non-working holiday across the Philippines in observance of the national and local midterm elections.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, on the authority of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., signed Proclamation 878 on Tuesday, ensuring that the public will have the necessary time to cast their votes.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) had previously recommended the declaration of a nationwide holiday to facilitate voter participation.

On election day, Filipino voters will elect national positions, including senators and House of Representatives members, as well as party-list representatives. Voters will also choose local government officials, such as governors, vice governors, mayors, vice mayors, and members of local councils.

The proclamation aims to provide citizens the opportunity to properly exercise their right to vote during this critical electoral process. (PNA)
