Nearly 839,000 Wisconsin residents are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this Memorial Day weekend, according to the latest forecast from AAA. The projection marks an increase of nearly 23,000 travelers compared to 2024.
AAA Wisconsin spokesperson Nick Jarmusz said the uptick is part of a broader national trend pointing to one of the busiest Memorial Day travel periods in history.
Nationwide, AAA anticipates more than 45.1 million Americans will hit the road, take to the skies, or board other forms of transportation during the long holiday weekend. That figure represents an increase of 1.4 million travelers from last year and sets a new Memorial Day travel record, surpassing the previous high of 44 million set in 2005.
Wisconsin’s travel numbers, while approaching record levels, still fall short of the all-time state high recorded in 2005, when more than 867,000 residents traveled during the holiday.
The Memorial Day weekend, which marks the unofficial start of summer, remains one of the most heavily traveled holidays in the United States, with millions expected to take advantage of warmer weather and time off to visit family, vacation destinations, or national parks.
