A recent survey by Greece’s Institute for Market Research reveals that nearly half of the Greek population will forgo summer holidays this year, citing significant price increases across accommodation, transportation, and food.
According to respondents, the cost of travel and vacationing has risen sharply compared to last year, making even traditionally affordable destinations financially out of reach. Accommodation prices, for example, rarely drop below 100 euros per night for a double room, placing considerable strain on family budgets.
Ferry travel, a popular choice for families, has also become prohibitively expensive. Although the government has assured the public that ferry ticket prices will not increase further this summer, many Greeks report that current fares are already beyond the means of average households.
The rising cost of dining out is another factor contributing to the shift away from holiday travel. Price increases of at least 20% have been noted in many tourist areas, prompting travelers to avoid costly beach bars and instead frequent public beaches where access to amenities such as loungers and umbrellas is free.
Despite the overall downturn in domestic travel, younger Greeks under 30 appear more willing and able to maintain holiday plans, often opting for budget-friendly options such as island camping trips.
Local hoteliers and business owners are feeling the impact of declining domestic tourism and are increasingly targeting international visitors, who are more likely to afford the inflated prices. At the same time, the tourism sector continues to grapple with staff shortages, complicating efforts to meet demand during the busy summer season.
As Greeks adjust their vacation habits amid economic pressures, the tourism industry faces significant challenges ahead.
