Memorial Day Ceremony Honors Fallen Soldiers in Lincoln

The community gathered Monday at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives serving the United States.

The Memorial Day ceremony featured a color guard presentation, the laying of a wreath and battlefield cross, the ringing of the Lincoln Fire & Rescue Honor Guard bell, and remarks from several guest speakers.

Lieutenant Colonel Margaret Ingerslew, speaking with Channel 8, emphasized the importance of remembering the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“This is by far the most important holiday,” Ingerslew said. “While many view it as a three-day weekend, ceremonies like these remind us that today is about honoring those who gave their lives for our country. It’s vital we remember and cherish their sacrifice.”

Ingerslew, an Air Force officer, spoke about the legacy left by previous generations of servicemembers and the significance of keeping their memories alive.

“I stand on the shoulders of giants — those who made it possible for me, as a female officer, to serve today,” she said. “We are improving in acknowledging all wars and sacrifices, and it’s important to recognize the role they played in shaping our nation.”

The community showed their support in various ways throughout the event.

“From honoring World War II and Vietnam veterans to families with current service members, the range of emotions was clear,” Ingerslew noted. “A 16-year-old even shared her excitement about wanting to join the Air Force. It was a powerful mix of solemn remembrance and enthusiasm for service.”
