The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day, marking 26 years of uninterrupted civil governance in Nigeria.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, and released to journalists.

Speaking on behalf of the government, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, congratulated Nigerians on the occasion. He described June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards building a nation founded on truth, justice, peace, and a hopeful future.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said. “The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength, and courage — a hope renewed like never before.”

He further emphasized that democracy is an evolving process, sustained through openness and continuous improvement. The Minister reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration—referred to as the Renewed Hope government—to uphold the universal values of democracy, rooted in the freely expressed will of the Nigerian people in shaping the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural systems.
