While Queensland’s Gold Coast, Noosa, and tropical far north often dominate family holiday plans, Brisbane—the state capital—offers an increasingly compelling alternative for families seeking sun, adventure, and relaxation.
Known for its mild year-round climate and relaxed atmosphere, Brisbane is now gaining recognition for its diverse range of family-friendly activities and attractions that go well beyond the usual expectations.
Having grown up in Brisbane, I once overlooked the city as a family holiday option. However, a recent trip with my young children revealed Brisbane’s considerable appeal for families wanting to balance busy days with moments of rest.
A Packed Itinerary with Something for Everyone
During a brief three-night stay, our family experienced some of Brisbane’s best offerings. Highlights included meeting native wildlife at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, exploring the immersive new Bluey’s World attraction, visiting museums and play centres, indulging in high tea, and dining at contemporary restaurants. We even ventured to nearby cities and enjoyed the luxury amenities of the five-star Westin hotel in Brisbane’s central business district.
Though managing young children’s energy and moods presented challenges, a full schedule of engaging activities kept the whole family entertained, provided plenty of conversation starters, and helped tire out the kids—allowing adults to relax and recharge.
Bluey’s World: A Cultural Phenomenon
Currently, the standout attraction is Bluey’s World—an immersive experience based on the beloved children’s TV show that originated in Brisbane. Located in the riverside suburb of Hamilton, the attraction offers visitors the chance to step into a detailed replica of the Heeler family home. The experience resonates deeply with children and adults alike, blending nostalgia with meticulous design and storytelling. The installation’s run has been extended until February 2026, highlighting its popularity.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary: Wildlife Up Close
Another family favourite is Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Visitors can enjoy “Koala Moments,” where guests have the rare opportunity to pat koalas and capture photos. The sanctuary also features kangaroo feeding, crocodile exhibits, and a variety of baby animals. Several onsite dining options help visitors maintain energy throughout a full day of exploration.
Dining and Accommodation: A Mixed Experience
Brisbane’s dining scene offers a range of family-friendly options. On our first night, Cantina, a trendy CBD restaurant, proved welcoming to children. However, an attempt at a more formal dining experience at Settimo by Guy Grossi in the Westin hotel demonstrated that fine dining with young children can be challenging. Fortunately, room service allowed us to enjoy the restaurant’s signature tiramisu and cocktails in comfort after retreating to our adjoining rooms.
Exploring Surrounding Areas
Just under an hour west of Brisbane lies Ipswich, Queensland’s oldest provincial city, which has undergone significant revitalisation. The Nicholas Street Precinct now boasts a vibrant mix of dining and entertainment venues while retaining historical charm. The recently refurbished Hotel Commonwealth exemplifies this blend, combining character with modern amenities including a cocktail bar and beer garden. Family attractions such as the Mini Bounce play centre and the General Public entertainment complex offer activities for various age groups.
To the south, Logan presents a mix of natural beauty and urban convenience. One highlight is Area 51, a large indoor adventure playground suitable for children as young as two up to teenagers. The nearby Devon Pixies café within the historic Kingston Butter Factory Precinct offers a charming high tea experience for families, complete with kid-friendly treats and a playground.
Other notable Logan attractions include the multicultural FGS Chung Tian Temple and the Daisy Hill Koala Centre, reflecting the area’s rich cultural diversity and natural heritage.
Brisbane and its surrounding cities are proving to be ideal family holiday destinations with abundant attractions, comfortable accommodation, and a welcoming atmosphere. For families planning their next Queensland getaway, Brisbane deserves serious consideration as a vibrant and versatile option.
