UK Travel Agents Urged to Cancel Spain and Majorca Holidays

by Bella

UK travel operators are facing increasing calls to cancel holidays to popular Spanish destinations, including Spain’s mainland, Majorca, and Tenerife, as protests over overtourism continue to escalate across the Balearic Islands and other holiday hotspots.

The latest demonstration is scheduled for Sunday, 15 June, aiming to highlight the challenges local communities face due to the surge in tourism. Protesters argue that excessive visitor numbers drive up living costs for residents and exacerbate environmental pressures.

The unrest is not confined to the Balearics; protests are also expected in Ibiza, Menorca, San Sebastián, Granada, Tenerife, and Málaga, reflecting widespread local frustration.

On social media, reactions from British holidaymakers have been mixed. One commenter remarked, “Notably the Spanish aren’t slow in taking holiday makers’ money though,” while another called for travel agents to halt bookings, citing “non-friendly actions against their clients and possible court cases.”

The rising anti-UK tourist sentiment poses a significant challenge for travel operators and the tourism industry. Authorities and local groups continue to debate solutions to balance economic benefits with sustainable tourism.
