Gibraltar’s appeal as a unique holiday destination was on full display last week as the Tourist Board hosted 37 members of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) during its fourth annual “famference” — a hybrid event combining a familiarisation trip and a conference.
The four-day visit introduced tour operators and agents, most of whom were visiting Gibraltar for the first time, to some of the Rock’s key attractions. The itinerary included a guided tour of Gibraltar, an e-biking excursion, and an immersive experience in the lower chambers of St Michael’s Cave, among other activities designed to highlight the destination’s cultural and natural offerings.
AITO Executive Director Martyn Sumners praised the initiative, noting that the visit revealed “far more to Gibraltar than you would know at first glance.”
Minister for Tourism, Christian Santos, welcomed the delegation and expressed satisfaction at the opportunity to showcase Gibraltar’s diversity.
“It’s a pleasure to present Gibraltar as a dynamic and multifaceted destination,” Santos said. “We’re confident that initiatives like this encourage greater tourism engagement.”
The visit forms part of the Gibraltar Tourist Board’s ongoing strategy to promote the Rock to a wider international market through partnerships with travel professionals. According to officials, these familiarisation visits often lead to direct bookings. One participating agent confirmed plans over the weekend to bring two tour groups to Gibraltar in the coming weeks.
