Malacañang has declared June 24 a special nonworking holiday in the City of Manila to commemorate the 454th anniversary of the Philippine capital’s founding.

The declaration was made through Proclamation No. 925, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on June 11 and published in the Official Gazette on Thursday. The proclamation recognizes Araw ng Maynila as a day for city residents to mark the historic occasion.

“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Manila be given full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration,” the proclamation stated.

Manila, the country’s capital and seat of government, is the second most populous city in the Philippines after Quezon City. It recorded a population of approximately 1.846 million in the 2020 national census.

Araw ng Maynila commemorates the arrival of Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi, who declared Manila a territory of New Spain (Mexico) on June 24, 1571.
