Phuket Imposes Weekend Alcohol Ban

by Bella

Authorities in Phuket have announced a temporary ban on the sale of alcohol this weekend in observance of Visakha Bucha Day and to ensure the integrity of upcoming municipal elections.

The alcohol ban will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, and continue until midnight on Sunday, May 11, totaling 30 hours in areas where municipal elections are taking place. In addition, a 24-hour alcohol ban will be enforced island-wide on Sunday in honor of the Buddhist holiday, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha.

The restrictions will apply to multiple areas across the island, including Phuket Town, Ratsada, Wichit, Rawai, Chalong, Karon, Patong, Pa Khlok, and Kathu. Other areas under municipal jurisdiction, such as Srisoonthorn, Cherng Talay, and Thepkrasattri, will also observe the ban.

However, districts governed by subdistrict administrative organizations—including Kamala, Koh Kaew, and Mai Khao—will not be affected by the election-related prohibition.

Local officials have emphasized that the measures are in line with national laws regulating alcohol sales during religious holidays and elections. Authorities are expected to conduct inspections to ensure compliance.

The dual observance underscores the importance placed on both spiritual traditions and democratic processes in Thailand.
