People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Para has called on the Jammu and Kashmir government to reinstate July 13 and December 5 as official state holidays, highlighting their significance in the region’s democratic history.
In a statement to the press in Jammu, Para stressed the importance of honoring those who made sacrifices in the struggle to strengthen democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. He specifically referenced the historical significance of July 13, a day when several individuals lost their lives in the fight for democracy against the monarchy, and December 5, another pivotal date in the region’s political history.
“Jammu and Kashmir has seen a significant voter turnout, marking the restoration of a popular government after a long time. While discussing the future of the region, it is vital to remember those who laid down their lives in the defense of democracy—whether it was Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah or those who sacrificed their lives on July 13,” Para remarked.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions regarding Jammu and Kashmir’s political history and the recognition of key historical events.
Para further emphasized the need for unity across political lines, urging lawmakers to pass a resolution recognizing these two days as official state holidays. “We should rise above political affiliations and come together to honor these important days,” he added.
When questioned about opposition to the proposal, particularly from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Para accused the BJP of framing the issue through a religious and regional perspective. “The BJP views this issue through a lens of religion, community, and region. However, this is not about any one group—it is about celebrating democracy. These days have been celebrated for the past 70 years, and it is time we continue to honor them as such,” he stated.
