Irish Parents Urged to Apply for EHIC Ahead of Summer Travel

by Bella

Irish parents planning holidays in Europe this summer are being advised to ensure their families have valid European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC), which allow access to public healthcare services in EU and EEA countries at reduced cost—or in some cases, for free.

Health authorities are stressing the importance of applying for the card well in advance of travel, particularly for children. While those aged 16 and over can apply for their own EHIC, applications for minors under 16 must be submitted by a parent or guardian.

The EHIC covers necessary medical treatment during temporary stays in EU/EEA countries or Switzerland, including holidays, short business trips, or academic study abroad. However, officials caution that the card is not a substitute for travel insurance.

EHIC Limitations

The Health Service Executive (HSE) notes that the EHIC does not cover private healthcare costs, repatriation expenses such as return flights home, or lost and stolen property. Additionally, the card does not apply if the primary reason for travel is to seek medical treatment abroad.

Healthcare coverage varies by country, meaning that services provided free of charge in Ireland may incur fees elsewhere. For this reason, the HSE recommends that travelers also maintain comprehensive travel insurance.

Who Can Apply

Irish residents intending to stay in the country for at least one year are eligible to apply for the EHIC. Applications can be submitted in person at local health offices (excluding Dublin North West and Cork North & South Lee), online for those with a medical or Drugs Payment Scheme card, or by post.

Each member of a family traveling abroad must have their own EHIC. Applications can be made for an individual, a partner, and any children under 16. Delivery typically takes up to 10 working days.

In cases where the card is required urgently, the HSE can issue a Temporary Replacement Certificate at a local EHIC office.

Additional Resources

Travelers are encouraged to check the HSE’s official website for detailed eligibility guidelines and to learn more about what is covered under the EHIC scheme.

This reminder follows other recent travel advisories, including new rules impacting Irish tourists visiting the UK and extended flight durations to certain destinations.
